Featured Community of the Month: Evergreen Park, IL

Located about 17 miles southwest of the Chicago Loop, Evergreen Park was settled in 1838 by German farming families. More settlers from Germany began to come into the area and in 1875 they opened their first school just west of 95th and Kedzie. During the financial crisis in 1890, many surrounding communities voted to be annexed by Chicago, however, they voted and decided to incorporate in 1893 looking towards the future with their business district. Today, Evergreen Park is surrounded by Chicago neighborhoods on three sides, Ashburn, Beverly and Mount Greenwood with Oak Lawn and Hometown to its western border.

1. The world’s first successful organ transplant happened in Evergreen Park at the Little Company of Mary Hospital in 1950. Dr. Richard Lawler, MD actually received a lot of criticism from various colleagues and the Catholic church at that time, but by 1970 he received the recognition he deserved as organ transplantation was becoming a life-saving necessity.

2. There are many notable people who were either born, raised or graduated from high school in Evergreen Park, such as: Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg (Actress/TV Host), Jane Lynch (Actress/Comedian), Chris Chelios (NHL) and H. Wayne Huizenga (co-founder of Waste Management and former CEO of Blockbuster Video).
